Who are we?

SMAA Football began in 1957. Since that time this program has taken registrations for over 10, 000 players. At one time games were played in the outfield of Errol Russell Park, where players had to navigate the stone dust of 2 baseball diamonds and even dodge a tree in the endzone. Games were hand timed and there was no scoreboard. Ten years ago, SMAA Football moved to Norm Perry Park, a true football field complete with score clock, permanent benches and stands for spectators.  There is a history behind this park, as the Sarnia Imperials, two time Grey Cup Champions, played their home games on this field.  Over time, however, this grass field deteriorated and many games were played in muddy conditions. SMAA is ealated to announce that 2013 will be the first year football in Sarnia will be played on brand new turf. SMAA Football has age divisions for Atoms (7-9 yrs of age), PeeWee (10-11 yrs of age) and Bantams (12-13 yrs of age). These ages are based on calendar year. Games are played Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. The season usually starts the first Wednesday after labour day in September and concludes the first Saturday in November.

SMAA Football operates on the following principle:

The Sarnia Minor Athletics Association is a non-profit organization, run entirely by volunteers, offering sports activities to the youth of Sarnia & District.

Aim -
It shall be the aim of the Sarnia Minor Athletic Association to foster the advancement of education in athletics and sports and promote good sportsmanship through athletics among minors in Sarnia and district, without restrictions of race, creed, or level of ability.

Purposes -
It has be the purpose of this Association to provide a wholesome experience, not only for the boys and girls participating, but also for the coaches, managers and league officials. Our main interest shall always be in the boy and girl and not in his or her ability. Sportsmanship, fair play, good citizenship, friendly competition, enjoyment and full participation for all team member shall always be our guide-posts. All decisions of this Association shall be tempered with reason and will always consider the feelings of the individual. It is our belief that this atmosphere will provide the greatest enjoyment and wholesome experience for all concerned.

"Good Sports Today - Good Citizens Tomorrow"

Principles -
The basic principles of the Association are:

  • no boy or girl who wants to participate is turned away (in good standing)
  • the greatest good for the greatest number
  • all children are encouraged to participate regardless of their ability to play the sport
  • each participant deserves a fair share in each game.

Artificial Turf Field Rules and Regulations

To preserve the quality of the turf, to ensure the safety of the public and users and provide a clean and healthy environment the following rules and regulations are in effect for the for the artificial turf field at Norm Perry Memorial Park:

  • Only water in non-breakable containers is allowed.
  • No food, sports drinks, gum, sunflower seeds or nuts.
  • Footwear must be molded rubber cleats, turf shoes or running shoes.  Metal cleats and/or screw-in plastic cleats are forbidden.
  • No dogs or pets of any kind.
  • No chalk, field paint or taping on field.
  • Tobacco products, smoking or open flames are not allowed.
  • No golf playing.
  • No motorized vehicles or bicycles.
  • No carts, canopies, umbrellas or spiked objects.
  • Only approved furniture or lawn furniture allowed on field.

Other considerations include:

  • No roller blades, skateboards or scooters.
  • No fireworks.
  • No alcoholic beverages.

General:  The facility is available to rent for approved uses only (e.g. soccer, football, rugby, field lacrosse and ultimate Frisbee).  No casual use is allowed.

  • Only players, coaches and officials are permitted on the turf.
  • Facility users must not enter the field prior to their permitted time and should leave the field at least five minutes before their scheduled end time to allow sufficient transition between groups.
  • Smoking is prohibited within the fenced area.

Staff must be alerted immediately to any instance of blood or vomit on the field.

S.M.A.A. Football Concussion Protocol

Concussions are always a concern in any physical sport, especially those where physical contact is a part of regular play. The health, safety and well-being of our players is our number one priority. Our coaches are required to complete the NCCP Safe Contact Training to coach players on proper techniques for tackling and contact play to reduce the risk of injury while still enjoying the game of football. Coaches are also required to stay educated on the signs and symptoms of concussions. Regardless of precautions, concussions cannot be 100% prevented; therefore in the case of a suspected head injury, players will be immediately removed from play. Parents will be notified and in more severe instances, medical assistance called (be it an onsite medic or 911). An incident report will be completed detailing the occurrence. SMAA Football will adhere to the standard ‘5 Step Return to Play’ which includes medical clearance from the player’s doctor. This return to play process requires regular monitoring, by both coaches and parents, for symptoms during gradual increases in activity levels. If a player has been examined by a doctor and the doctor determines there was NO concussion, a medical note it required to confirm a return to play date. Coaches will continue to monitor players who have returned to play (even those cleared and confirmed as not concussed). Should symptoms appear in any activities, the player will be immediately stopped and concussion protocol will be implemented. Our rule of thumb is ‘when in doubt, sit them out.’ Communication with parents/guardians will be an integral part of this process. REFUND POLICY

Refunds shall be allotted as follows:

a. Registration refund (less the $10 processing fee) if the player quits prior to the start of the season (first regular season game).

b. One half refund if the player quits from the up to and including the regular season game.

c. No refund after once into the third week of regular season games.

d. ALL EQUIPMENT MUST BE RETURNED to the head coach (and as such deemed ‘in trust’) in the specified time for the appropriate refund to be issued.
